Wholesale Art
As with many areas of wholesale purchasing,
there are basically two ways to obtain wholesale art: buying
in bulk and buying direct. Buying wholesale art in bulk can
give the individual or someone wanting to resell a great
price per individual piece and an even lower price for buying
in quantity. Buying wholesale art direct helps the individual
avoid middleman costs, often allowing the person to get art
objects directly from a manufacturer of excellent reproductions
or original items from an artists' representative.
In the first instance, you will probably
have to contact a wholesale art dealer/supplier and establish
a wholesale account. In most cases you will have to provide
business license numbers and state sales tax information
that proves you are a retail site, an interior designer or
member of another trade that has access to wholesale
art. When the wholesale status has been approved, you
will be able to receive wholesale discounts on art prints.
For the retail buyer, there are usually
separate prices on wholesale art. While these numbers may
not be as low as those for wholesale art trade buyers,
they will probably be considerably less than what you would
pay in a gallery or retail outlet. As one supplier emphasizes, "if you
are not in the art business, you are welcome to place an
order for any of our art prints at the prices shown to you." Wholesale
art buyers (bulk) receive a completely different set of instructions.
Prices on wholesale art and quantity
discount prices on wholesale art are generally more than
half the price on a similar print or reproduction from
the retail dealer. So, you should probably not expect any
further discounts or price cuts. For example, a landscape
print that might cost $20 or more in a gallery or retail,
can be purchased for $8 to $15 from a "wholesale art to the public" source.
The range of prices is set by the size of the print you order,
from 8.5 x 11 to 11 x 14.
Some wholesale art distributors specialize in prints of
quality art, providing items to frame shops, galleries, gift
shops and so on. Fortunately, the individual buyer who wants
to have top-quality prints can work with these same suppliers
to get excellent wholesale art at less than half the retail
price. Many times these suppliers will work with an individual
who wants to purchase only one or two prints and still get
the lowest price.
Suppliers of wholesale art usually divide their products
into categories that help the buyer and seller narrow the
selection. For instance, if an individual buyer wants something
in the animal category, suppliers will immediately skip the
beach scenes, kitchens, gardens and lighthouses, to look
only at animals. Then the choice can be narrowed even further,
aided by computer search programs that are in wide use in
the wholesale art industry.
Many of the wholesale
art suppliers not only provide production prints and
items from less well-known artists, but these suppliers
also offer fine art pints on high quality papers. As one
supplier notes, these are not cheap posters. They are fine
art lithographs and prints sold for 2 or 3 times the money
at retail.
To find a reputable supplier in wholesale art, ask questions.
Does the dealer have years (decades) of experience.? Does
this dealer have exclusive representation with top artists?
Will this dealer give you names and contact information for
satisfied customers? If so, you are well on your way to a
good experience with wholesale art.
